Homecoming

“Dinner’s Ready!” mother shouted. My brother, Thomas and I hurried to our seats as she set up the most special yet delicious feast ever. There the warm alluring smell of braised meat and freshly baked bread which excited Thomas and me as our mouths were slowly drooling like dogs; even the vegetables smelled smoky and more aromatic. Mother made the food on the table looked like it was a feast because nothing in the world looked more beautiful than what’s right in front of us.

Whilst we were staring, father appeared out of nowhere. His hugs and kisses were warmer than I remember, Thomas leaped into his arms to take all of father’s warmth for himself because he couldn’t stand to be apart much from father. The joy of seeing him come home from work weeks after he was gone never left our hearts, not even mother’s. As everyone sits, we begin praying: praying for a better future, for love and for joy. As our prayers were almost over, something whistled long and sharp above our heads. A sudden deafening BOOM then thundered and the roof came rushing down. At that moment I froze in spine chilling fear, confused about what I was seeing and deafened by the noise. All of a sudden there was a cloud of dust in the air, and sudden intense agony as the piling squashed me and crushed me onto the wooden floor.

I couldn’t make heads or tails of where I was, my eyes sharply locked on to a pair of fair legs which seemed to be mother’s. Red liquid was pooling out fast as she lay piled up by bricks and boards. I could see Thomas right next to me, staring at me wide and blank, as blood trickles down his pale face.

Grunting with effort and pain, I tried to look for father, but he was nowhere. I began hearing sirens wailing in the distance as well as screams and moans coming from every direction. Eventually the screams were turning silent; my eyesight began fading away as for it got darker and darker as the clock ticked by.

I love you mummy. You too daddy. And Thomas, wait for me…
