Welcome Back to School!
After the year-end holidays, I sauntered nervously through the school gates, wondering what the new year held for me. It was of great relief when I met up with some of my friends, ones that I had made during the brief time I enrolled into the school last term. We made small chat as we sought our class. I settled in and waited for the rest of my classmates to file in. Unfortunately, we had no new classmates.
We started the day with a presentation of the school rules, and Ms. Geetha, our classroom teacher made us remember every single line of it. Then we elected our class monitor, Carmen. It seems we would elect a new monitor every two weeks so that everybody gets a go at the position. We also discussed a few other matters related to school such as the events and challenges that will be held throughout the term and year, expectations of our behaviour and grades et cetera.
We also played games at intervals. One of it was ‘Assassin’. A detective will be selected and sent out of class while we picked an assassin, who will then kill either by randomly winking at a victim or pointing a ‘two-finger’ gun at the victim. The detective’s job was to walk around the classroom and identify the ‘assassin’. The game was hilarious as the chosen victims had their own dramatic way of dying. Not to mention the genuinely puzzled face of the detective who had a tough time figuring out who was the assassin. After this really fun and thrilling game, we played two more ice-breaking games for us to know each other better. I really enjoyed coming back to school after a month’s break, and I look forward to another school year.
After the first day, I was excited to meet up with my friends again. As per the first day, orientation was done as a class with our class teacher. We went through more of the school’s norms and expected culture. In addition, we became acquainted with our schedules and subjects. We also did a projection of what marks or grades we hoped to attain over the term and the year for every subject, which was a sobering thought of the looming IGCSE examinations. Plus, the importance of carrying the homework diary daily for record, reflection and communication purposes. In between, we also got to play a few fun games to break up the routine.
There was an interesting game that we played which involved us facing another person in two long lines. Our teacher came up with 5 things to do, and when she shouted it out, we had to perform it immediately, for example: clap, turn around, squat, star jump or bark. After a while, she would just shout the number and we had to remember and do the corresponding activity quickly. We had to be very alert to the instructions or we would do the incorrect step or do it late which resulted in a lot of giggles and laughs.
We also got to select what activities we would prefer to do for ECA and CCA periods. After lunch, we had our sports house meeting where we discussed about related activities, sports theme for 2023 which is ‘Pokemon’, and election of sports house captain and other positions. To my huge surprise, I got elected as my house, Citrine’s, captain!
That’s end of day 2. Tomorrow we start our classes as usual. I can’t wait to see what is in store for all of us this year. So, here’s wishing all of you, a wonderful year ahead!
