A “Glitzy” Fashion Show

Friday 14 March was Eco Art Day. In this event, students were provided a platform to save the environment through the innovative creation of costumes by using recyclable materials, which most people would generally consign as trash. Scrap fabrics, broken jewellery, newspapers and magazines, cardboards, plastic packaging and discarded accessories found new purpose in the hands of resourceful designers. Trash became a treasure trove of possibilities!

Being able to help the planet by recycling everyday products to create clothes was an incredible experience. Creativity knew no bounds when it came to breathing new life into old items. Broken jewellery became embellishments, plastic bags become futuristic articles of clothing, and cardboard boxes become fantastical props. I was charged with wearing a costume that was designed by my sport house members. The costume idea for my sports house, Citrine, was based on the Chinese Hopping Zombie, ‘Jiangshi’.

The costume was made mostly with newspaper with tape, safety pins and an unused shirt. It was not as easy to move around in the costume as I had initially thought. I had to hop around carefully to make sure the safety pins on my shoulders would not slip loose but the hat would fall of every now and then. Not to mention, the costume was also very warm. However, overall, it turned out very well. Sapphire House went with newspapers as their main source while Emerald House used plastic mostly. Ruby worked with cardboard and plastic bottles or containers as their source. It was pretty interesting to see the various costumes take shape under students peculiar yet surprising ideas.

Unfortunately, Citrine House didn’t get first but we placed third which is already great by my standards. Ruby House got first with their very innovative and well-crafted costume twice; Sri Petaling and Seri Kembangan campus. It was an amazing experience and I will definitely be interested in doing this again.
