Cooking For Homeless

On the 13th of May 2022, I started my day being late to school for community service. Once I reached school, all the Ruby members were already busy with the cooking preparation. I rushed in quickly to join the team. We cooked chicken ketchup with potato, cabbage with carrot stir fry as meals to be given to the homeless. We were all equally given a task to complete. Among the tasks we did were, cutting the onion, garlic, ginger and vegetables. Meanwhile, another team was in charge of cooking the rice and also cleaning the chicken.

I helped around with the cooking team and exchanged people to cook and stir when others were getting tired. Cooking was almost done by 9:00 am and we moved on with the cleaning session. We were all moving like a busy bee because the teacher wanted us to get everything ready by 11:00 am. On the other side, other teams were busy packing the food and arranging the food into boxes to be carried. There were a total of 50 packets of meals to be distributed.

We were ready and we saw another 50 packets of food given by our school caterer for this project. We carried all the food boxes and boarded our bus to the destination. Upon our arrival at the distribution area, many of the homeless came toward us and we did not even have time to focus on anything else except distributing food and mineral water to them. In a blink of an eye, the food was gone. I had a mixed feeling looking at their living conditions and I am truly thankful for this experience as it was an eye-opener to me and many of my friends.

After we came back to school, we had a debrief session with Ms. Maureen and Ms. Ed. we share our experiences and some had questions about why these people end up being homeless. The teachers explained to us and told us that we can always volunteer to care for the needy ones whenever we can. We cleaned up and packed the things which we brought from home after the briefing. The teachers were proud of our teamwork and encouraged us to keep up with the good work in future. Well done Ruby members!
